Thread: VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 3.0.1)

my question not directly related ubuntu. however, still hope can answer it.

when checked plugins in firefox (about:plugins), saw multimedia files handled either "vlc multimedia plugin (compatible totem 3.0.1)" or "windows media player plug-in 10 (compatible; totem)". on other hand, about:plugins page (of firefox) says these 2 plugins associated libtotem-cone-plugin.so , libtotem-gmp-plugin.so.

synaptic says these 2 .so library files installed totem itself. nothing vlc or other "media player".

question why totem's own mozilla plugins named vlc plugins? in fact real question learn framework (gstreamer or ffmpeg) used decode multimedia objects processed these plugins. (totem based on gstreamer, whereas vlc based on ffmeg). there anyway learn program being used decode these multimedia files above plugins?
