i'm trying decide of these video cards better ubuntu 11.10.

apparently, gt430 better not higher price 128 bits bus so, has better.

no. because has known problems vdpau , it's not stable gt520. gt520 has less features.

of using gt430? watch mkv's without problems? perhaps, new nvidia drivers, gt430 totally supported.

if i'd prefer going sure, gt520 has no problems @ all, think it's pity buy inferior card stability.

in basic terms...
video cards performance vdpau depends on (2) separate components.
bit stream decoder & shaders.

container (mkv, mpeg2-ts, mpeg4 etc) not issue, correct/standardised use of video encoder.
media player has able push data h/w decoder.
feature set c added mpeg4-asp.
feature set d cards include gt520.

gt520 has better/best decoder can decode (2) h264 hd streams (or 4k ?).
gt240 & gt430 have better shader performance.
gt430 smaller card similar performance (bit slower) gt240.

shaders used post decode processing scaling, denoise, sharpen, colorspace, & importantly va de-interlacing.
there 3 types of vdpau de-interlacing; vectoradaptive demanding.
not these shader features needed same material.
i.e. don't need hqscaling hd sd dvds.

there has been recent discussions on mythtv forums indicate gt430 can not maintain scaling & va de-interlacing @ times.
summary:
depends on source material.
ota broadcast hd needs va deinterlacing.
dvd & other sd needs hqscaling & little sharpening & va de-interlacing.
bd vc1 24p should no problem on gt520
bd h264 i50/i60 rare.

if want wait best card oem gt540 or new kepler gt640.
right buy gt240 current offerings not enough (520)/not available (oem 530/535/540).
