Thread: libpython removed ... Ubuntu won't start

ubuntu version: 10.04 lts

hi everyone,

attempted install latest version of virtualbox , received message saying libpython needed version 2.7 or higher , had 2.6.

selected , installed 3.1 (which available in synaptic) , left 2.6 installed.

virtualbox still protested couldn't find 2.7 or greater deinstalled 2.6 ... virtualbox still protested.

deinstalled both versions , decided re-boot planning install 3.1 afresh ... hoping traces of older versions removed re-boot.

... horror ... ubuntu refuses boot: black screen "ubuntu" , "progress dots". arrgghh!

frightened removal of libpython has affected core component of operating system (?) , hope can me beloved ubuntu (without having re-install).

many, many thanks,
