i have 8gb flash drive , 500gb usb external hd used backup. want mess around ubuntu 12.04 on 8gb flash drive. here's tried. on win7 tried resize flash drive 700mb partition , rest partition can put ubuntu iso installer on 700 partition , install on rest of it. failed. couldn't boot.
tried resize 500gb usb hd , make small partition accommodate ubuntu installer didn't boot either. how can accomplish without formatting hd?

i have made external hdd bootable , booted linux distros. boots usb flash drive. used unetbootin make bootable.

suggest format small partition fat32 , add boot flag , lba flag. need not first partition, maybe should primary partition.

regular booting (of internal drives) linux can boot logical partition, haven't tried usb drive.
