Thread: Different version troubles with Samba

i'm pretty new linux, posted in absolute beginners section. think section more relevant. i've decided use ubuntu in our office, starting out nas. ran test on old laptop. loaded ubuntu server on it. sure 10.04 32 bit, may have been 1 of newer ones. had installed gnome desktop well, core server edition. test worked perfectly. computers see , communicate samba.

ordered actual server. fujitsu tx100 s2 if it's relevant. had turn off onboard raid controller in order ubuntu server 64bit version install. set software raid. no desktop time. using best of knowledge same settings before, xp machine see server, 1 won't communicate samba. (oh, , have new router)

short version:
no de installed time
64 bit vs 32 bit versions
raid set up
hardware - laptop vs server
new router

headed on samba troubleshooting page, , got little way that, before went on understanding. did 1 important piece of information. apparently both server , client should able ping each other name. can ping server ip, not name. server can ping desktop either way. don't remember wording, whatever said made me decide leave dns proxy no. hadn't touched in test run.

in advance

edit: had replied wrong thread of mine. 1 wound being typo problem.
