Thread: data files overwritten and swap partition hosed

hi, wanted input on problem have experienced before try fixing it. i'm running lubuntu 11.10 on dual-boot laptop (with winxp pro). it's hp/compaq 6720s laptop single 80gb drive partitioned follows:

/dev/sda1 ntfs 30 gb windows xp pro
/dev/sda2 extended 45 gb with
/dev/sda5 ext4 24 gb lubuntu 11.10
/dev/sda6 swap 6 gb linux swap space
/dev/sda7 ntfs partition documents needed either os

lost documents other day. downloading old comedy film jdownloader. default, set open archive (using default lubuntu install of archive manager) once has downloaded parts. away computer when did this. came , saw had finished downloading automatically-extracted film did not play. noticed hard drive showing full, figured there had been no room left extract file.

made space backing largish file (gnewsense iso) usb disk before deleting hd. re-extracted film , time worked. @ point during (i forget), bookmarks (ie. favourite locations had stored) in file manager disappeared. seemed data had been overwritten. next day, tried opening xpad had 2 weeks of notes i'd made since first installing lubuntu. found notes lost. later, running gparted, saw swap partition showing having 'unknown' file system, suggesting damage.

before reformat swap space, thought i'd better ask here in case had thoughts on occurred (beyond 'make sure have enough hd space in future' , 'back-up important'! ) , might try , fix it. i'm guessing there's no likelihood of retrieving lost xpad data , text isn't 'somewhere' in swap file.

whole thing not massive issue feel aggrieved software (either os/kernel or jdownloader or archive manager or xpad) have not 'respected' user data. have been in similar hd-run-out-of-space situation before on xp , never lost personal data. feeling less trustful of new system result.

hello,

have used windows xp installation lately? sure there no problems indicate problems hd itself?

have wonder if running out of space wasn't problem symptom of larger problems disk or os (that is, may not have run out of space).
