Laptop: 95% NTSC TN vs 60% NTSC IPS for my use?
i'm new photography, got g3 in december 2011. had nothing compacts prior. bought lightroom 4 , started shooting raw year ago. upgraded g5 last fall , upgraded lightroom 5. i shoot family , vacation photos, , in particular lot of photos of our toddler. export jpeg on shared drive stream a couple of hdtvs viewing. print, , if do, it's frame a photo came out particularly @ 4x6 or 5x7 or stick on fridge. in short, it's personal / hobby, nothing professional / paid / critical, although best job can my limited skill set.
historically i've been using desktop pc w/ 23" 72% ntsc matte ips monitor calibrated spyder4pro , it's been fine. however, life changes when baby starts walking, , no longer have time to camp out in basement developing photos. after getting further and further behind, started shopping laptops use desktop replacement roam around house watching son, , while traveling. based on this, laptop screen needs suitable for editing, , not rely on external monitor.
looking @ sagers 95% ntsc matte panels. they released haswell-based model ips screen. emailed sager about color gamut, , it's 60% ntsc. thought may subpar since doesn't cover srgb, ended model 95% tn screen, i've calibrated sypder4pro stating 91% ntsc.
laptop nice, , has nicest display of laptop i've ever owned. however, vertical angles still limited. i'm wondering how important 95% color gamut when don't know @ exactly angle i'm seeing colors @ accurate rendering. believe slight shift see within reasonable range of viewing angle not create severe problems when finished jpegs viewed on tvs, i'm wondering if 60% ntsc ips screen have been better choice.
i'm not making fine adjustments color, don't know how any real degree. apply huelight standard g5 profile on import. i might tinker bringing out blue in sky on landscape shot, or add touch of vibrance, has more amount of color, not whether color accurate. i'm not moving tone curves around , stuff that. adjust white balance, don't know if reduced gamut impact ability that. it's more a matter of warmer vs cooler whether shade of blue meets argb specifications.
i've got couple weeks of no-questions-asked return window left. on 1 hand, i've spent lot of time getting programs installed and set way want, lightroom running fast, , exchange , re-setup significant hassle. on other hand, i'd make purchase last on order of 5 years, , could justify day or if there's compelling reason so.
so, have opinion offer? particular use, a cheap ips panel doesn't cover srgb make more sense high end tn panel covers argb? guess make either 1 work i'm doing, , there's not enough reason to switch @ point, i'd hear more knowledgeable it. has done editing on low gamut ips monitor , experience?
thanks!
steve
if can return it, so. color gamut least of concerns - standard gamut display beats mediocre wide gamut 1 day.
i'm wondering how important 95% color gamut when don't know @ exactly angle i'm seeing colors @ accurate rendering.
you hit nail on head. sums whole question. tn panels not suitable photography work, they're gaming , office use.
i have wide gamut @ work , standard gamut @ home, , work between them without missing step. wide gamut nice added bonus, no means necessary. important thing calibrate, colors can display accurate.
