Thread: Network filtering and caching

hello. new ubuntu. have several laptops in family on we've installed ubuntu 11.10. several dual boot windows vista , few ubuntu only. have older desktop - 512mb ram on network. our internet connection via satellite because live in country, have severe limitations on bandwidth available. have 3 things accomplish, possibly using desktop server(?).

1. create content controls laptops connected network (main priority). because have satellite, opendns not work (i've looked it).
2. monitor amount of internet traffic , possibly alert when threshhold has been exceeded (nice not necessary).
3. create caching server ubuntu package updates have download them once , reuse machines (would helpful).

have done lot of reading, linux noobie, , don't know network configurations, dhcp, etc. i'm not sure of best way go this. things seem simple still assume knowledge don't yet have.

so, possible 3 of these? if not, best way implement content controls network? think transparent proxy sounds want, still don't understand or how set up. can use ubuntu (or lubuntu) desktop or need server? can use old desktop this? , how hook up, considering have wireless router right connected satellite modem?

sorry have many questions; if me started somewhere grateful.

1. squid + dansguardian https://help.ubuntu.com/community/dansguardian . make sure __only__ allow users connect internet through proxy. means iptables rule deny access lan -> internet, allow lan -> squid.

2. long don't shutdown server, ifconfig show amount of data sent. vnstat (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ho...ttraffictotals) polling amount of data transfered every few minutes, theirs app runs daemon too.

3. try apt-cache-ng. guide debian, works ubuntu well. http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~bloch/acng/html/index.html .

"Could not fill because there are not enough opaque source pixels" - not solved by any other thread

i'm getting error posted in thread's title , have no idea why.  working image not transparent in way. 100% opacity.  in fact, doesn't matter work with, every time try fill selection on layer in doc, error.  ideas???  thanks   scott probably see screen shot of photoshop layers panel open. at point guess can make wrong layer selected, once see screen, else may pop out @ me, or else reading thread. Why can't I change the billing info for my account?

hi all,   about 3 weeks ago issued new corporate cc number. have been trying since find way update in website. everytime try load billing info message 'there has been error on our side, please try again later.' has been happening weeks now. decided, if they're not going fix it, i'll call support.   i reported bug support, no response.   i called support , sat on hold update cc. hung on when should have been answered. happened twice (i'm persistent).   i registered call-back. got call-back, , told needed go person. got warm transfer because of above problem.   this person told me needed talk yet different team, , schedule call me in 1-2 hours.   it has been on week, maybe week , half since supposed receive call-back, , ticket updated yesterday; they've tried reach me no success (yeah, right), them do? left note: call me @ number within next 4 hours, , can settle this. guess got pacific time support team, because called 16 hours later (i'm gmt, way; company u...
