Thread: Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit does not recognizes my 4G RAM (32bit+PAE does)

hi folks,

question may have been answered before, failed find answer because, if exists, it's buried in thousands of google results problem (people tring 32 bit non-pae systems map more ~3 gb ram).

have installed ubuntu 11.10 in dell inspiron n4050 laptop core i5 processor (sandy bridge, 2nd generation), system fails recognize 4gb of ram.

in 64 bit installation, free shows me:
code:
$ free              total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached mem:       3963304    2107852    1855452          0     110656    1245604 -/+ buffers/cache:     751592    3211712 swap:      5857276     150400    5706876
for pure experimentation/investigation, formatted system removing 64 bit edition , installed ubuntu 32 bits + pae enabled kernel; 4096 mb of memory correctly identified.

since have no plans of running 32 bit system in machine, removed 32 bit edition (formatting disk) , installed 64 bit edition again try solve problem. have got similar problem?

quick facts:

- system is running 64 bit ubuntu 11.10 now;
- use linux ten years , i'm not afraid of commands;
- memory is ok; passes memtest86, shown expected in 32 bit + pae edition;
- memory identified windows 7 came pre-installed in machine (now removed);
- system have intel hd graphics controller (afaik) should not reserve memory -- system have here, seems driver allocates memory on fly instead of reserving it;
- system updated;

also, follows uname , lspci

code:
$uname -a linux stark 3.0.0-16-generic #28-ubuntu smp fri jan 27 17:44:39 utc 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 gnu/linux ~$ lspci 00:00.0 host bridge: intel corporation 2nd generation core processor family dram controller (rev 09) 00:02.0 vga compatible controller: intel corporation 2nd generation core processor family integrated graphics controller (rev 09) 00:16.0 communication controller: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family mei controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 usb controller: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family usb enhanced host controller #2 (rev 05) 00:1b.0 audio device: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family high definition audio controller (rev 05) 00:1c.0 pci bridge: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family pci express root port 1 (rev b5) 00:1c.1 pci bridge: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family pci express root port 2 (rev b5) 00:1c.3 pci bridge: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family pci express root port 4 (rev b5) 00:1c.7 pci bridge: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family pci express root port 8 (rev b5) 00:1d.0 usb controller: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family usb enhanced host controller #1 (rev 05) 00:1f.0 isa bridge: intel corporation hm67 express chipset family lpc controller (rev 05) 00:1f.2 sata controller: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family 6 port sata ahci controller (rev 05) 00:1f.3 smbus: intel corporation 6 series/c200 series chipset family smbus controller (rev 05) 05:00.0 ethernet controller: realtek semiconductor co., ltd. rtl8101e/rtl8102e pci express fast ethernet controller (rev 05) 09:00.0 network controller: atheros communications inc. ar9285 wireless network adapter (pci-express) (rev 01)

why you think virtually not full 4gb?
