Thread: Installing ubuntu on pre-partitioned HDD
i used gentoo years. went win7 , need linux again. think ubuntu-64bit way go now. have gentoo hdd partitioned this:
1. small /boot partition. (don't remember size, ext2)
2. 512mb swap partition.
3. 60gb / partition, ext4.
4. 100gb /home partition, ext4 data saved.
questions:
1. can install ubuntu , utilize above 4 partitions?
2. can install /home partition left intact?
3. let's there /home/paapaa directory user paapaa. if create user "paapaa" in ubuntu, ok if directory there data in it? or should rename directory first , copy need later new ~/paapaa?
4. should use default installer accomplish above?
you don't need /boot partition, although may have 1 if choose. unnecessary, though.
yes. when install, not use default. instead choose manually partition. choose each partition use, , tick "format" except /home partition.
but, installation, there (small) chance of data loss, please first!
yes, ok.
but, stated, there (small) chance of data loss, please first!
as stated, no; choose manual partitioning.
way, swap should equal ram (or greater), @ least 1gb. if have 2gb or more, can use 64-bit without problem; 1gb or more, 32-bit; less 1gb, rather choose lubuntu.
