Thread: Backups

hi all

i'm looking up. objectives are:

- backup several windows machines (just mount shares?) , linux machines
- backup locally specific server , and replicate off site (i have linux box remotely to)
- keep last month worth of nightly ups
- keep once month, 1st of each month few years

in past i've backed single machine single destination rdiff-backup , left no retention etc. i'm dealing lot more data though i'm going have manage better. upon searching see if can 'keep nightlies month , keep on 1st of each month 2 years' found rsnapshot.

rdiff-backup:
- has option run --remove-older-than except want keep 1st of each months well

rsnapshot:
- has retain option same issue rdiff-backup basically

correct in thinking in both cases have run 2 backups? nightly , monthly 1 , set retain/remove-older-than appropriately? annoying surely means lot more data transfer , storage when data there?

i'm thinking off site copy can use rsync or between 2 servers keep replicated copy of backup destination.

tips, ideas, or i'm missing please?

thanks
