Thread: Archlinux vs Ubuntu Minimal 64 bit

just wondering, since i'll using minimal openbox config, difference between 2 default kernel since i'll using 64 bit? know arch packages optimised i686 i'm i'll go 64 bit packages.

leaning bit more on minimal ubuntu side, cause of variety of packages, bit hesitant way have system upgrades on ubuntu.. develop android apps , prefer go ubuntu way since preferred google.

thanks.

at end it's matter of personal choice, i'll try , give few things think about.

packaging - ubuntu uses apt-get, arch uses pacman package management, work in same way different syntax, example:
code:
pacman -sy
to update package list.
code:
pacman -s <packagename>
to install package.
pacman takes care of dependencies apt-get.

upgrading - arch rolling release avoid 6 monthly (or 2 year lts) upgrade cycle. simple 'pacman -syu' updates packages on system latest versions, system using bleeding edge software.
can lead breakage although i'd never use arch on production system, it's fine workstation use though. long keep eye out possible issues on website , @ what's being upgraded should fine (i've had happen once in 12 months far).
can problem if trying use arch development environment though, want target specific version of mysql, python etc. these being updated latest versions.

source code - far possible arch uses unpatched source code directly upstream. means bugs more able fixed software devs instead of being patching issue (ubuntu patches code lot of it's packages fit in ubuntu way of doing things).

install arch ground adding need feel tends quicker ubuntu due lack of excess baggage. openbox on arch absolutely flies on modern hardware happening pretty instantly.

installation can tricky if you're used graphical installs, follow beginners guide letter , can't go wrong. because of start system on know configuration intimately.

pretty need know how given detailed explanation in wiki, it's 1 of best i've ever seen. lead forums being bit hard on newbies, if answer in wiki or answered in forums you'll told in no uncertain terms. ask problem you've researched though , forum members knowledgeable.

i've been running arch 64 + gnome shell 12 months install on rig , absolutely loving it. still prefer ubuntu business use because lot easier support, can install lts , done 5 years
