Thread: USB sticks - FAT or NTFS?
which reliable file-system use backup , archiving of data on usb sticks (and usb-hdd's)?
being portable, should work on ubuntu , windows.
this excellent article explaining different file-systems, indicating journaling system such ntfs superior fat or fat32. fat should used usb sticks.
there expert consensus best , reliable file-system use usb devices?
many thanks!
hmm... well... here's opinions of own:
sticks of 2gb or less might stick fat32 because cannot run file size limitations of fat32 on such small media. (the limitation 2.1gb, have dealing 4gb or larger flash drive.)
beyond that, biggest issue see using ntfs compatibility. now, true, we've got read/write support linux , it's pretty solid, if develop issues ntfs partition, may have go windows fix them, problem.
also, if you're planning on having multi-platform, mac users have install osxfuse , ntfs-3g able write thing, same issues linux users have unclean ntfs partitions, etc.
ntfs makes total sense if:
1. need traffick in files larger 2.1gb and
2. need cross-platform compatibility; or
3. #1 true, you're *only* dealing windows.
because, otherwise, ext2/3/4 , others support >2.1gb files, , mac os extended.
