Thread: Understanding IW command / options

i went page....

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man8/iw.8.html

, saw this:
iw - command syntax

object dev <interface name> - network interface. phy <phy name> - wireless hardware device (by name). phy#<phy index> - wireless hardware device (by index). reg - regulatory agent.

not sure how use it.
example: iw phy <phy name>
can correct linux name phy?

ubuntu man pages quite vague , lack many description.
is there better reference?

went here:

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/documentation/iw#adding_interfaces_with_iw
, saw this:
for example add monitor interface:
iw phy phy0 interface add moni0 type monitorwhere can replace monitor else , moni0 interface name, , need replace phy0 phy name hardware (usually phy0 correct unless hotplugged or reloaded modules.) if udev configured incorrectly, newly created virtual interface may renamed right away, use ip link list interfaces.

still not explain got phy name ( phy0 ).
in fact entire description on iw needs better examples , explanation....
so think missing link here complete understanding.
is there reference discussing how names assigned hardware devices?
wonder linux driver development type book may shed light....., if there such book or reference....

comments please.

thanks.

to discover names of hardware devices on computer, type in terminal
code:
lshw
you're not looking generic name of hardware device, you're looking specific name of specific hardware. won't in textbook.
