Thread: Confused over MD5 checksums (Windows vs Linux)
i'm confused whole md5 checksum thing.
allow me explain confused about.
have md5 text files i've created in windows , i'm using linux (in case ubuntu 12.04 beta 1) finding cannot check them without being told there formatting error.
use md5sum (in terminal) create new md5 file. when compare other md5 file (that made in windows) see numbers (the md5 checksums) match , formatting same not exact. i'll give example.
have folder 2 files in it. we'll call them filename01.mkv , filename02.jpg example. md5 file made in windows looks example below , md5 file made in linux looks example b below:
as can see 2 same other asterisk in front of file names (in windows created md5 file). linux created md5 file doesn't have asterisks. instead there space asterisk be.code:example - windows md5 253343b4d39e9e8b337a7db300d5e7dd *filename01.mkv cd103030ad0dd35ecf0af1d6cc327417 *filename02.jpg example b - linux md5 253343b4d39e9e8b337a7db300d5e7dd filename01.mkv cd103030ad0dd35ecf0af1d6cc327417 filename02.jpg
said when try use md5sum in linux check md5 made in windows i'm given error (wrong formatting). when try check md5 made in linux using windows error (again due difference in formatting).
there way around formatting difference? right solution see manually edit md5 file remove of asterisks (since of md5 files windows created , yet i'm trying convert myself full time linux via ubuntu means need check these windows created md5 files in linux).
appreciated!
based on http://thestarman.narod.ru/dos/md5progs.html
shouldn't matter, using asterisk supposdly archaic way format md5sum files, on system md5sum doesn't complain abou asterisks being there. perhaps need more up-to-date program md5suming in windows?
