Thread: After software update 10.04 hangs on boot

i've had ubuntu 10.04 running on desktop while without issues. went away weekend, , when came there software updates available, ran them, , required reboot. clicked "restart now". ubuntu fails boot past ubuntu splash screen.

have no backup, task week make one. great timing.

i'm not sure should begin start diagnosing issue, suggestions appreciated. installation pretty close stock 10.04 i'd say, i'm hoping can possibly perform sort of "repair" on installation live cd, not sure if possible.

have tried boot recovery, pressing 'esc' anytime during boot nothing.

anyways, guys can give me. i'm looking quickest , easiest way myself was. not interested in upgrading past 10.04 right now.

edit: tried make bootable ubuntu live usb drive, , failed. followed instructions on download page t, received no errors terminal in os x, , yet fails boot on desktop. don't think have blank discs available... can figure out without dvd/cd. usb drive need formatted other fat32? why it's not able boot?

anyone have idea start?
