Thread: 32 to 64 bit memory usage
searched similar post. apologies if posted.
hello all,
run little home server purpose of file sharing , code compiling (computer science student). distribution chose ubuntu server 10.04. first machine using old dell dimension 4300 given me. have found learning environment, needed bit (or 32) more powerful. have lenovo thinkcentre can handle tasks easier.
after booting dell used ~30 mb of memory rest cached. lenovo uses ~200 rest cached. question this: moving 32 64 bit increase system memory usage such large amount?
specs:
dell dimension 4300
pentium 4 @ 1.4ghz
1024mb ddr1
40gb hard drive
lenovo m58p
core 2 duo @ 3.0ghz
4096mb ddr3
160gb hard drive
i not entireley sure, but have expirienced in using both ubuntu , windows 7 on various machines, noticed how ram usage different despite having identical setups on machines. biggest memory usage seen on devices biggest ram. guess is, os "adjusts" memory usage total ram available, using less if 1 gb there leave enough space other applications , using more 8 gb since there space tons of applications.
again, observation based on expirience.
hope helped
regards
