Thread: Identifying a SPECIFIC Partition
ladies , gentlemen:
i’m ancient fellow minimal computer expertise try ubuntu 10.10. have searched extensively , have found various posts talk around problem, not address it. hope can help.
pc (running winxp home) has 2 (2) hdds each of have 3 (3) partitions. want install ubuntu specific partition. when installation selection screen, see entries /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3, etc. (these not exact entries, examples – did not want go through futile installation process again copy list). used partition magic note used , unused mbs on each partition of hdds – figures not match displayed ubuntu!
bottom line – how in world identify partitions c through when viewing “/dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3, etc.”? there “trick” have missed?
in advance response.
you can work out observing order of partitions partition manager within windows (including default microsoft supplied 1 in mmc) displays , correlate ubuntu displays. factors can use correlation partition size, partition id, filesystem type, used/free space (though unreliable metric), , volume label/id.
best note these down on piece of paper, first displayed windows itself, ubuntu installation/livecd shows. if there's volume label, enough uniquely identify formatted partitions.
way around 2004 used triple or quadruple boot windows, red hat, mandrake , freedos on 15 partitions. it's bother keep track of these, around installation/re-installation periods, can little patience.
