Thread: grub- not able to reinstall

hi,

boot drive no longer boots, on 11.10 xubuntu. yesterday got message , using boot-repair allowed me reinstall grub , boot fine. morning got different message, not being able read file (long time since trying fix things, cannot remember exact message). tried boot-repair alternate cd boot, time complained had package manager of sort running, when did not, not use it. tried put grub on 2 ssd setup according http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...pport-on-linux. result purple screen , nothing beyond that. see http://paste.ubuntu.com/872772 ideally i'd work, have never been able ubuntu installed on it.

tried grub-install original spinning disk on /dev/sdc, using "sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/dev/sdc" , message "rm: cannot remove `/mnt/boot/grub/load.cfg': read-only file system
/usr/bin/grub-mkimage: error: cannot open /mnt/boot/grub/core.img"

seem stuck now. ideas?

thx.

david

i not know raid, looks grub installs looking boot md0 or install inside raid.

install in sdc1 looks not part of raid set should use livecd reinstall grub sdc.

#comments after #, enter commands in terminal session
#install mbr livecd/usb, ubuntu install on sdc1 , want grub2's bootloader in drive sdc's mbr:
#find linux partition, change sdc1 if not correct:
sudo fdisk -l
#confirm linux sdc1
sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt
#if grub 1.99 natty or later uses boot not root.
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdc

# if no errors on previous commands reboot working system , run this, in bios choose boot sdc:
sudo update-grub
