Thread: the best cheap graphics card for a media computer


i have media computer setup these specs:
pentium 4 @ 3.0ghz, ht
4gb dual channel ddr 400 mhz ram
radeon x300 graphics card
300w brand-name psu

has pci express graphics slot.

running ubuntu 11.10, plan upgrade 12.04 when comes out.

radeon x300 painfully slow. video played in fullscreen @ 1920x1080 choppy. blame poor drivers, card isnt one.

want upgrade graphics card can play fullscreen 1080p videos, , light gaming.

being media computer, needs quiet. fanless or quiet fans.

budget: $40-50

best card can find nvidia geforce 520, seems best deal:

thoughts or recommendations?

that looks pretty me. doesn't have fan + in book -- quieter , no risk of overheating due fan failure. seems amd/ati has gotten better linux support i'd still choose nvidia. here's list of nvidia chipsets supported latest 64 bit driver:
