Thread: Problems playing audio CDs in 10.04 LTS Lucid

as newbie linux wanted rip cd collection mp3, tried ripperx. while thought working (cd spins, ripping , encoding progress bars activate , accurately counts down 20 minutes complete cd) didn't produce mp3 files. tried "rip wav" radio button met same degree of failure. cddb lookup fails "error code 20. not connect cddb server" though connected internet @ time. no errors reported dmesg file wrote ripperx off , uninstalled it.

installed , tried use asunder cd ripper. @ least cddb lookup works on program! however, program produces wav files when mp3 selected!!!

figured have more basic problem here - maybe it'd best try play audio cd first.

so, tried use movie player play audio cd. when told movie player select cd requested search missing plugin: audio cd source. searched, said "no packages requested plugins found. requested plugins are: audio cd source." (i make sure i'm connected internet during time.) movie player play mp3s ripped in windows, though.

next tried exaile. nothing when play key pressed although list cd's tracks , duration.

finally, used vlc player play individual tracks after press <ctrl-d> cd menu , change "starting position" option 0 whichever track want start playing. marginally better because plays selected start track - "next media in playlist" button restarts same track. play next track have go cd menu again , select 1 want next. doesn't have "next track" button, "next media in playlist" button can't understand why bother it. don't want have manually create playlists every cd might want play!

btw when type dmesg | tail 50 50 lines of following:

pc triple boots ubuntu, xp or vista, exact same hardware plays/rips audio cds under windows no problems. problem exhibits in linux audio cds, old ones not mixed mode, , home-burnt cds wav files on them.

i'm running ubuntu 10.04.4 lts 32-bit shown here:
$lsb_release -a
lsb version: core-2.0-ia32:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-ia32:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-ia32:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-ia32:core-4.0-noarch
distributor id: ubuntu
description: ubuntu 10.04.4 lts
release: 10.04
codename: lucid
$
also, i've installed lame 32bits version 3.98.2.

figured ubuntu lts version have of irritating bugs ironed out disappointingly appears not case. hardware old hp nx-6325 laptop 1gb ram , amd sempron mobile cpu. i'm trying hard learn linux , don't want have keep going windows run media player play cds or cdex rip them mp3 (this program excellent. pity it's not available linux!)

have 2 problems - can't play audio cds , can't rip them mp3 @ (under linux). guess i'm missing software/plugin(s) vlc player doesn't need, vlc lacking ability play entire audio cd when inserted it's awkward use player. assume whatever that's missing preventing ripping taking place, if can cds play think it's ripping burst life.

why difficult? appreciated.

p.s. found similar(ish) problem regarding playing audio cds here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1751589
had different symptoms showed similar errors in dmesg. solution reinstall brasero when did made no difference problem.

this should pretty work out of box (aside needing install mp3 encoder, of course).

found old post '08 recommends installing libcdio-utils, maybe help.
