Thread: Headphones mute at medium- to high volume

i got through re-formatting hd , re-installing 11.10. system's year old, , had couple of annoying issues , cruft had been building up, hoped give me fresh start. well, did in way, of old problems remained, , in cases gotten worse!
biggest problem sound. don't have desktop speakers, headphones. first issue when plug them in, sound mutes. can unmute sound mixer widget on system tray, it's still annoying. what's worse sound mutes if volume high. not consistant, , seems depend upon how bassy (?) sound is, not level. instance, can crank volume on song, , okay awhile, when part of song kicks in, it'll kill sound. reducing volume unmutes again. so, songs have listened @ lower volume others.

here's output aplay -l:

code:
**** list of playback hardware devices **** card 0: sb [hda ati sb], device 0: vt1708s analog [vt1708s analog] subdevices: 2/2 subdevice #0: subdevice #0 subdevice #1: subdevice #1 card 0: sb [hda ati sb], device 1: vt1708s digital [vt1708s digital] subdevices: 1/1 subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: generic [hd-audio generic], device 3: hdmi 0 [hdmi 0] subdevices: 1/1 subdevice #0: subdevice #0
(i tried following steps here, wants me install unity, don't feel doing. use kde. necessary install default ubuntu desktop sound troubleshooting?)
