Will LR5 write keywords for PNGs to a sidecar or directly to the file?

the dialog box in lr 5 says:

“for…file formats supported lightroom (jpeg, tiff, png, psd , dng) xmp metadata written original files.”

however, have been told way lr5 stores pngs "is not universal standard , not 1 programs read. until unified in same way exif , iptc data is, risk losing tags."

that being said, if ever switch different program organizing png files, there risk program not able read keywording had done in lr5?

thanks light can shed.

"it possible embed xmp metadata in png files, according xmp specification.  however, documentation exiftool png tags suggests practices storing xmp or exif metadata in png images have not been consistent."

i'd other programs may not able read lr or ps metadata written png files.
