Thread: Installed 11.10 from USB but can't boot from Hard Drive
i installed ubuntu on kids computer while ago , suggested friend after failing able install xp on new machine hp pavilion desktop. apologies, complete beginner , need step step 'idiots' guide. of may or may not relevant:
have read thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1801336 not know how gather boot info script provide similar information
here's have managed 'b*gger up' far
computer had freedos installed. when booting xp cd loaded load of files , got blue screen stop: ox000007b , error message no fat32 installed. followed ms instructions use fdisk create fat32 partition, made no difference , there appeared no way dos i.e. no dos command line. turns out xp disk, although genuine, oem version not compatible new machine.
downloaded 11.10 onto usb stick, changed bios settings , installed onto empty hard drive, gave him basic ubuntu demonstration, launched firefox, connected net etc, re-started machine usb drive removed. when re-booted, screen turned 'ubuntu' purple, no ubuntu logo/name or red dots, multi coloured , started 'pulsating' , nothing else happened.
re-started again , checked bios settings booting hard drive - same again (a few times).
re-inserted usb stick, , moved in boot order , ubuntu loaded fine again, running usb stick, changes made earlier e.g. changing 'home' page in firefox not retained.
ran gpartition , showed 2 partitions on hard drive , usb stick. main partition (i think sda) not 'mounted' - mounted it. re-started machine usb stick removed , ubuntu loaded (apparently hard drive_ - great thought. happened once. further re-start , ubuntu wouldn't boot. running off usb now. other thread mentioned fdisk if have deleted dos somehow, how can again. can open ubuntu terminal window run gpartition extent of skills. if need boot info script/ other info, how this?
thank in advance help!

/dev/sda5 linux-swap 3.99gb active no flags
, usb stick
/dev/sdc1 fat32 mount point /cdrom label pendrive flags boot, lba
