Thread: All-In-One Server

hi all

trying setup server home use. though i'm not entirely sure use. since ubuntu among supported figured i'd give shot here.

problem encounter not lack of tutorials, more organization. not sure start , proceed.
hoping here point me tutorial (or set of tutorials) cover wish accomplish.
going assume ubuntu server 10.04 lts base?

hope aim is:
-headless (i dual screen setup on windows , have 2 screens )
-a web server (serving web site or 2 family overseas share photo gallery , stream home videos)
-file sharing within home network (1 pc , 4 laptops) -->webdav?
-streaming xbox360.
--this biggest one. know there lot of options have no idea best 1 (i know, objective)
while looking i'm trying find out if on-the-fly transcoding possible have mkv files xbox can not play.
can use windows machine tversity i'd move files on server.


optional;
-file sharing outside home network (android based phones family overseas (though suppose latter done dropbox)
-sharing (outlook) address book

point subdomain server subdomains gallery/video site.

if has more suggestions on server appreciate hearing them.

oh, hardware pretty good.
no video card, have core2duo , can run windows 7. 2gigs of ram, should sufficient wish accomplish (i hope)


i'm sure plenty of people have done want do, i'm merely hoping find out how did it.
thing have point out linux n00b...no have come ubuntu @ least 4 times fail , give every time.
should stick windows, don't want use windows , know fact can accomplished.


ps; tried amahi, streaming video didn't work out. apps found cost money.
, if have install manually might rid of bulk don't need. start scratch.
