Thread: Screen Resolution Problem In Ubuntu 11.10

i installed ubuntu 11.10 2 months ago , have noticed screen resolution not correct. right default resolution @ 1080x768 , laptop's native resolution 1600x900. using gateway nv78 intel mobility 3 series gm45. installed driver video card, no luck. running newest kernel , i've been reading driver can used on lower kernel versions.

i'm noobie @ stuff, don't expect me know tell me. here xandr info:

xrandr: failed size of gamma output default
screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1600 x 900
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 76.0*
1600x900_60.00 59.9

when try change resolution 1600x900 error message :

required virtual size not fit available size: requested=(1600, 900), minimum=(1024, 768), maximum=(1024, 768)

i've tried changing resolution manually through terminal, error messages on failing size of gamma output , not.

how laptop's screen resolution on ubuntu native resolution? have wait ubuntu 12.04 released end of month?

please help!

i having same problem. trying change screen resolution depressing 800 x 600. monitor utility shows option , monitor shown "unknown". tried solution found on various wikis involving editing xrandr "failed size of gamma output default" message. have toshiba nb525. intel® graphics media accelerator 3600 series- integrated. assuming have convince ubuntu recognize monitor somehow? (explained in small words) newbie.
